Scope and Contents

This series contains deeds to cemetery plots in Southborough's Rural Cemetery, records related to the maintenance and upkeep of graves, and a plan of the cemetery that was drawn in 1874. Plot deeds are organized alphabetically by the plot owner's surname. Plot deeds provide the date of purchase, name of the lot purchaser and their home address, the lot and range numbers of the purchased plot, and amount paid for the plot in addition to perpetual care.

Cemetery deeds in this volume are organized alphabetically by the plot owner's surname. Contrary to the volume’s names, no plans or diagrams of the plots are included. The Old Burying Ground is the town’s oldest cemetery and was utilized from the town’s inception in 1727 through 1843 when it became too crowded to accommodate further burials. Since there was no separation of church and state in Massachusetts until 1806, the majority of records pertain to the First Congregational Church where the pastor was an employee of the town.
