Item — Container: Bound Volume Shelving, Town Clerk’s Vault

Scope and Contents

From the Collection:

By definition a Chattel Mortgage is a loan used to purchase an item of movable personal property. They include a description of goods and chattels, the terms of agreement between parties concerned, names of vendor and vendee, place, amount, list of goods or chattels, amount paid, conditions and agreement of mortgages, payments, and signatures of vendors. Some volumes include an index listing vendors and vendees alphabetically, along with the year and page number.

Chattel Mortgage books were often ‘catch-alls’, and used to record a lot of miscellaneous town records in addition to the Mortgages, such as dog licenses.

Dog licenses include the date and number of license, owner's name, and the dog's name along with its age, breed and color.

Volume 4 also includes Appointments of Railroad Police (1883), Assignments of Mortgages (1884), Notices of Women Doing Business in Their Own Names (1884-1890), an opinion of P. C. Bacon regarding the Town of Southborough and the Pilgrim Evangelical Society relative to lands and sheds (1884), Bills of Sale (1885)

Preservation Actions

This volume underwent conservation treatment in January 2017 at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, MA.

Treatment Summary: The volume was collated and disbound. Pages and enclosures were surface cleaned where necessary. The inks were tested for solubility. The pressure-sensitive tape was removed mechanically and with heat. Metal fasteners were removed mechanically. Enclosures with obscured manuscript material were removed with local applications of moisture but in general they were left adhered to support leaves. Mending of tears was minimal and performed only where absolutely necessary using Japanese paper and wheat starch paste. Pages and enclosures were placed in buffered folders and housed in two custom phase boxes. A filler piece was constructed to the interior dimensions of the previous binding. The previous binding was housed in a custom phase box. Written and photographic treatment documentation was kept by NEDCC and provided to the client.

Materials used in the conservation of this volume include: Japanese kozo paper, Aytex–P wheat starch paste and lignin-free buffered folder stock.
