Preservation Actions

This volume underwent conservation treatment in January 2017 at the Northeast Document Conservation Center in Andover, MA.

Treatment Summary: The volume was collated and disbound retaining the original sewing. The broadside was removed from the front pastedown with local applications of moisture. The head, tail and exterior pages were vacuumed to remove mold (fungal structures). Pages were then surface cleaned where possible. Tears were mended with Japanese kozo paper and wheat starch paste. Handmade paper endsheets with linen hinges were attached. The sewing was reinforced with linen tapes and linen thread. The volume was bound in full cloth using a split-board structure and titled using a gold-stamped leather label. The broadside was placed in a buffered folder. The volume and foldered broadside were housed in a custom phase box. Written and photographic treatment documentation was kept by NEDCC and provided to the client.

Materials used in the conservation of this volume include: Japanese kozo paper, MacGregor handmade paper, Aytex–P wheat starch paste, Jade 403 adhesive, unbleached linen thread, linen tapes, unbleached airplane linen, Superior Millboard, Bristol board, buckram bookcloth, Harmatan goat skin, 23 karat gold foil and lignin-free buffered folder stock.
