Scope and Contents

This series is composed of loose-leaf stubs, receipts and financial documents relating to services rendered in digging graves, building coffins, and mowing and clearing the graveyard. References are made to both the “town burying ground” and "burying ground at Pine Hill", and the names of the deceased are usually included. The majority of the material dates from 1773-1810, and 1831-1846.

7) List of payments totalling one pound, seven shillings, and eight pence made by the Town of Southborough to cover arrangements for the burial of the late Samuel Bellows. Includes six shillings and eight pence to Thomas Stone for making his coffin, five shillings and four pence to Ezekiel Collins for digging his grave, four shillings for a shirt and cap to be buried in, two shillings and eight pence for a winding sheet to wrap the corpse, two shillings to the widow Williams for her assistance in laying out the corps and washing it, and one shilling for “taking the number from sixteen years old and upwards” (2/24/1777).

22) Report of the burying ground committee relative to finding a suitable place for a new town burying ground. The committee recommended a portion of land on Perley Whipple's farm (3/3/1828).

23) Payments made to Charles Johnson: Six dollars and fifty cents from Josiah Bemis for a coffin and grave for Asahel Bemis (11/21/1831), fourteen dollars and twenty-five cents from the Estate of Nathan Fay for a coffin, grave, and gravestone for Nathan Fay (2/24/1831), payment of six dollars and fifty cents from the Estate of Nathan Fay for a coffin and grave for the widow Lucy Fay (2/22/1834), payment of six dollars and fifty cents from the Estate of widow Mary Fay for a for a coffin and grave for Mary Fay (1/8/1833), and payment of thirteen dollars from the Estate of Erastmus Ward for a coffin and grave for Erastmus Ward and a coffin for the widow Hannah Ward (1/30/1834 and 2/20/1834).

28) Payment of one-hundred-fifty dollars from the Town of Southborough to Parker Humbard for one hearse (5/13/1846).

29) Payment of one-hundred-fifty-eight dollars from the Town of Southborough to Solomon Este, Charles Johnson, and Peter Fay, committee chosen by the town to procure a new hearse (7/6/1840).
