Births, Marriages, Deaths, 1779 - 1863

Item — Container: Bound Volume Shelving, Town Clerk’s Vault

Scope and Contents

This volume contains alternative copies of the town's vital records that occasionally provide additional information not found in the vital records book that covers 1762-1836. The volume is composed of 10 small notebooks that were disassembled and post-bound together in mylar sleeves. Notebooks include: Lucy Sanger’s Book of Deaths 1804-1827, Martha (Temple) Bridges journal 1812-1820, Original Marriage Banns 1779-1792, Marriages 1792-1835, Marriages 1806-1863, Foreign Deaths 1822-1863 (deaths of Southborough residents occuring in other locations), Deaths 1827-1854, Stephen Newton’s Book of Deaths in Southborough 1804-1862, and Congregational Church Records c. 1780-1800.

The Journals kept by Lucy Sanger and Martha (Temple) Bridges contain a record of deaths in the town of Southborough and surrounding area, along with additional notations about their family members in other areas of New England.

Stephen Newton’s Book of Deaths includes many interesting notations and causes of death not found elsewhere. He recorded the death of Lucinda Giger, an Indian woman who died while passing through town on August 2, 1827. Lucinda’s death is not found in the official Town Vital Records. The Congregational Church records and town burial records make references to her, but do not include her name.
