Records of Diseases Dangerous to the Public Health, 1915 - 1960
Scope and Contents
Beginning in 1915, municipal health departments in Massachusetts began documenting cases of dangerous and communicable diseases. Doctors and school nurses were expected to report cases as they became aware of them. The resulting ledgers include a wealth of information and serve as a particularly thorough account of the town’s experience with the influenza epidemic. Southborough recorded 75 cases of influenza between September 1918 and January 1919, and an additional 4 cases between April 1919 and February 1920. The Town’s death records show influenza as the cause of death for 13 town residents between 1918-1920.
