Preservation Actions
Condition on Receipt:
The quarter leather binding with marbled paper sides was dirty, worn, and abraded. The leather was desiccated, the endcaps were tom. and some leather was loose on the boards. The cover was detached from the text block and the pastedowns were no longer adhered to the boards. The text block consisted of machine-made paper, which had been gathered into sections and sewn through the fold onto textile supports. The sewing was intact, but the spine lining was weak. Pages were ruled in red. and entries were in various manuscript inks. Pages after 16 were blank. The book had an overwhelming musty smell. Microchamber paper interleaving was added during the evaluation to mitigate odors. This was removed before the item was returned to the client.
Treatment Performed:
The volume was collated and disbound retaining the original sewing. The pages were surface cleaned where necessary. Tears were mended where necessary with Japanese kozo paper and wheat starch paste. Handmade paper endsheets with linen hinges were attached and the sewing was reinforced with linen thread. The volume was case bound in full cloth. The volume was titled using a gold-stamped leather label. The volume was housed in a custom-fitted archival box. Written and photographic treatment documentation was kept by NEDCC and provided to the client. When not in use, the volume should be stored inside its custom fitted box on the shelf. Materials used in the conservation of this volume include: vulcanized rubber sponges, Aytex-P wheat starch paste, Jade 403 adhesive, Japanese kozo paper, MacGregor handmade wove paper, unbleached linen thread, microcrystalline wax, unbleached airplane linen, Superior Millboard, Bristol board, Canapetta bookcloth, goat skin leather, gold foil.
