Preservation Actions

Condition on Receipt: The limp paper cover with cloth spine was dirty. worn, creased, and stained. A pressure sensitive paper label with manuscript title information was adhered to the front cover. The label was partially detached. The cloth spine was thin, brittle, and torn in several places. The cover had a small loss on the front. The back cover had numerous oily stains which had penetrated the paper and stained the last few leaves of the text block. No mold or mold damage was observed during the examination. The text block consisted of thin machine-made paper, which had been gathered into sections and sewn through the fold onto textile supports. The sewing was intact but one sewing support was broken. A single folio was tipped-on at the front of the volume and had become detached. Pages were ruled in red and blue with black printed headings. Entries were in brown manuscript inks. Some manuscript inks were faded. The pages had surface dirt, embedded grime, and creases throughout.

Treatment Performed: The volume was collated and disbound retaining the original sewing. The pages were surface cleaned where necessary. Creased pages were humidified and flattened. Tears were mended and folds guarded where necessary with Japanese kozo paper and wheat starch paste. The volume was sewn with linen thread and bound in quarter linen with handmade paper sides. The volume was housed in a custom-fitted archival box. Written and photographic treatment documentation was kept by NEDCC and provided to the client. When not in use, the volume should be stored inside its custom fitted box on the shelf. Materials used in the conservation of this volume include: vulcanized rubber sponges, Aytex-P wheat starch paste, Jade 403 adhesive, Japanese kozo paper, Barrett papercase handmade paper, unbleached linen thread, microcrystalline wax, unbleached airplane linen, Golden acrylic pigments.
