After the death of Rev. Nathan Stone, Southborough had a difficult time finding a minister who was willing to settle in the town as his replacement. This series contains payments made to temporary preachers, and communications between the town and potential candidates for Southborough’s ministry.

1. Payment of four pounds and four shillings from the Town of Southborough to Peter Stone for boarding Mr. Plumb for seven weeks (3/11/1784). Folder: 1003-032.

2. Payment of fourteen pounds and three shillings from the Town of Southborough to Peter Stone for boarding Mr. Plumb for thirty-one weeks at nine shillings per week (3/11/1784). Folder: 1003-032.

3. Payment of eight shillings from the Town of Southborough to Peter Fay for supplying hay for Mr. Plumb’s horse (3/21/1785). Folder: 1003-032.

4. Receipt for seventeen pounds, fourteen shillings, and eight pence received by William Plumb from the Town of Southborough as a portion of what he was owed for preaching (4/20/1784). Folder: 1003-032.

5. Payment of seven pounds, nineteen shillings and four pence from the Town of Southborough to George Brigham for tending to Mr. Plumb’s horse for three weeks (5/31/1784). Folder: 1003-032.

6. Receipt for one pound and ten shillings paid to Jonathan Wilkins by the Town of Southborough for supplying the pulpit (7/26/1784). Folder: 1003-032.

7. Receipt for twelve pounds paid to Samuel Kendal, executor, by the Town of Southborough for Dr. Moses Haven preached to the town for eight sabbaths from December 12th 1784 to January 30th 1785. Folder: 1003-032.

8. Payment of one pound and eight shillings from the Town of Southborough to Peter Fay for tending to Mr. Haven’s horse for eight weeks (3/17/1786). Folder: 1003-032.

9. Reimbursement from the Town of Southborough to William Collins for ten shillings paid to Mr. Sargent for preaching (3/8/1786). Folder: 1003-032.

10. Letter from Solomon Aiken to the Town of Southborough and its inhabitants rejecting the Town’s request to have him settle as their pastor. Aiken wrote: “seeing no propriety or scripture warrant for your present made and manner of admitting persons to the seals of the covenant, [I] think it not my duty to practice in that way” (6/3/1786).
