After the death of Rev. Nathan Stone, Southborough had a difficult time finding a minister who was willing to settle in the town as his replacement. This series contains payments made to temporary preachers, and communications between the town and potential candidates for Southborough’s ministry.

1. Payment of eight shillings from the Town of Southborough to Jonas Woods for “keeping the preacher’s horse for two weeks” (3/6/1782). Folder: 1003-031.

2. Payment of nine pounds, six shillings, and six pence from the Town of Southborough to Peter Stone for boarding the preachers for eighteen weeks (3/11/1782). Folder: 1003-031.

3. Payment of twenty-seven shillings from the Town of Southborough to Nathan Bridges for 9 weeks tending to the preachers’ horses (5/30/1782). Folder: 1003-031.

4. Receipt for three pounds paid to Walter Lyon by the Town of Southborough for supplying the pulpit (7/20/1782). Folder: 1003-031.

5. Receipt for fifteen pounds paid to Joseph Kilburn Jr. by the Town of Southborough for supplying the pulpit (11/7/1782). Folder: 1003-031.

6. Payment of four pounds, 11 shillings, and 6 pence granted by the selectmen to Nathan Bridges for a journey to Lincoln Cambridge to hire a preacher (3/1783). Folder: 1003-031.

7. Payment of eighteen pounds and ten shillings from the Town of Southborough to William Plumb (4/25/1783). Folder: 1003-031.

8. Citizens Petition to call Mr. William Plumbs to settle as preacher in Southborough after the death of Rev. Stone. Signed by: Joshua Smith, Nathan Bridges, Ebenezer Bellows, Jotham Bellows, Gideon Newton, Seth Newton, Benjamin Mixer, Zacheus Witherbee, Asahel Mathews, Ezekiel Newton, Absolom Ward, and Thomas Stone (11/13/1783). 9. Letter from William Plumb to the Town of Southborough, thanking them for calling him to serve as their preacher of the gospel, and stating that he was not yet sure whether he would accept the post, but would need to procure a place for residence in Southborough if he did (11/24/1783).
